Groups, Classes & Workshops

Practitioners at People House offer a wide variety of groups and classes. The descriptions provided below can help you decide which best fits your needs.

Why Groups, Classes & Workshops?

In the wired world of the twenty-first century the Internet allows us to connect with people and knowledge from around the globe. Digital encyclopedias, chat rooms, multimedia, even a virtual office at home, are all there at the click of a mouse. But is clicking really connecting? And what must "click" before we connect to ourselves?

At People House, our experience tells us that access to global information is no substitute for a deep connection to our own inner spirit. As human beings, that's really what we're looking for. Even in the most sophisticated lifestyles, the man or woman at peace is the one with self-knowledge.

In a group setting we find that we're not alone in our search. As we hear others tell their stories, we see how they deal with struggles not unlike our own. In telling our personal stories, we see the gift of our uniqueness reflected back to us in the loving faces of the group members. We feel compassion for others and for ourselves. We learn new behaviors and gain the courage to try them out in a supportive environment. We feel safe to shine a light on dark places in our life experiences. In the process, we connect to others and to ourselves.

Experience The Healing Method Of Medical Qigong

Jon Chavarria will demonstrate how Qi power can be channeled to eliminate both physical & emotional pain. This method called Tao Energetics is based on Chinese energy medicine, an ancient healing art. The results are experienced and felt instantly. Pain caused by physical, emotional, or trauma results in blocked energy. Once the blockage is located, an energetic correction is performed, focusing energy on the midline of the spine. This process may need to be repeated as more blockages are discovered. As a result, balance is restored. Jon will address any issue presented to him, as this method can be used in any situation to promote healing.

Series of Workshops/Classes

Quantum Transformation I

"The aim of this book is not just to knock down the prison walls but to fly over them" Deepak Chopra MD
If you are a seeker, a student of life, or a "transformer," this practical book study on "Awakening in Time" is meant for you. Jacquelyn Small, author and pioneer in Spiritual Psychology, invites us to move beyond labels into sacred purpose. Exercises, rituals, guided imagery, and group hypnosis are used to create a path into healing and wholeness. Ideas are integrated from the 12 steps, Western mysticism, Jungian thought, and the Chakra system, We move from codependence, defined by Jacquelyn as "the way we give our power away as human souls to intimates, to strangers, to projects or careers that don't come from our hearts, to societal standards, and even to a God we may not experience as connected to us at all" into our unique creativity and unfolding right relationships at all levels.

Caretakers Workshop

This workshop is for people who have taken on the extremely difficult task of providing care for a loved one or friend who is experiencing chronic pain, a serious disability, or illness over a long period of time, sometimes with no clear end in sight. In this situation, caretakers can experience a wide range of emotions (including anger, guilt, sadness, anxiety, and more) resulting from the daily stress of being responsible for someone who is unable to fully care for themselves. People who step into the role of the caretaker often find that their lives are also drastically changed. They sometimes have to learn to manage economic, medical, legal, and even the smallest details of their own and others' lives. This workshop is an opportunity to meet others in similar situations, where they can share and learn ways to cope with their stresses and struggles. Participants will be encouraged to share their experiences and information that may be helpful to others. The possibility of an on-going support group will be discussed.

Transitions in Recovery: A Guided Journey of Expressive Writing

Recovery is one of the biggest transitions of our lives. Transition is defined as reaction to a change in situation, roles, relationships, and life view significant enough to affect one's life and functioning. This three-week writing workshop will allow you to explore the three phases of transitions: endings or what we let go; the shaky neutral zone between the known and the new way; and new beginnings, in which we reach emotional acceptance and redefine who we are. Journal techniques will unearth fresh insights to help you move forward. Explorations are quick, easy, and reliably revealing. Recovery can be from addiction, compulsion, disordered eating, illness, habit or anything you define as a healing change. Therapeutic writing tools will help you understand your transition process and manage the range of feelings inherent in change.

Estrangement Support Group

Are you experiencing estrangement with your adult child, parent, sibling, grandchild, or someone else in your family? Feeling alienated from one's family experience causes a myriad of emotions including: heartache, shame, sorrow, isolation, blame, rejection, confusion and anger. You may wonder, "What did I do that was so horrible to deserve this"? Often times you may feel judged by the reactions from others. A decision to no longer have contact with a family member can have long term implications. Although prevalent, many people suffer alone with this silent epidemic. There can be powerful healing in connecting with someone else's pain that comes so close to something we have experienced. This group will be a safe place to share your story, validate your feelings, and provide hope, encouragement, and mutual support. We will work towards healing and strengthening your resiliency.

Ongoing support group for "juicy crones" – that is, women aged 50 and up who want to enrich and expand their lives as they age, For many, including myself, we are surprised when we realize we're "50-something", "60-something", "70-something", etc., because we don't feel that "old" inside. Gone are the days of grandmother shoes and blue hair. Instead, we want to feel younger/more alive as we age. We will explore our feelings, fears and hopes about aging, discuss ways that we can maximize our individual potentials, creativity, and ability to live life to the fullest. We will look at the many resources available in this process including family, partners, friends, community, spiritual beliefs and healing methods. A dynamic and fun group with lots of participation and mutual support; open-ended and ongoing, limited to 10 participants.

Spiritual Exploration

Spirituality refers to an ultimate or immaterial reality; an inner path enabling a person to discover the essence of their being; or the deepest values and meanings by which people live. Our experience tells us that access to the latest technology is no substitute for a deep connection to our Inner Spirit. We need to be daring to live an authentic life, and it helps to have support! Wayne and Lori believe life's ultimate goal is to live from our Essence. Using a variety of consciousness tools, we will create an safe, honest, open space for your growth. Objectives are: finding a connection with your own "Higher Power", not someone else's version; developing mindfulness; clarifying your personal obstacles to peace; releasing worn-out, unsuccessful core beliefs and distinguishing between the voices of your ego and your higher power. Format will be didactic, experiential and interpersonal. This program is both a stand-alone program, as well as a continuation of Spiritual Exploration I. It is a core component of the PH Ministerial Training Program, but is open to all seeking to advance their spiritual experience. Contact us for a free consultation.

Lots of years in bicultural family and an international childhood prepared Sherry for a social work career of supporting biracial and bicultural identity. There are ways to teach children how to navigate a world that still holds stereotypes and empower parents to address school and relationship issues. What kind of neighborhood is best? What unspoken messages could your children be picking up from family members and/or society? Have you divorced a parent of another race and are trying to maintain cultural contacts? Or feel ambivalent about whether you should? Parents of infants, parents of teens and grandparents are all welcome. Increase your tool box, to celebrate and empower!

Get Healthy with an Energy Tune-Up

The body's organs and structure can be mapped on the ear; these points can be activated through the use of electrical, cold laser, magnetic, and heat stimulation. We will start the evening with an introduction to QiGong. The Acutherapy segment of this workshop will introduce you to auricular points of the ear, to help you deal with common conditions such as obesity, addictions, and stress. You'll become familiar with the ear's topography so you can easily identify and stimulate points in order to restore both emotional and energetic balance to the internal organs and structure of the body. Sooji (Hand Acutherapy) delivers fast, effective pain relief. You'll gain an understanding of how your whole body is mapped to your hands by locating meridians and key acupoints on the hand as well as evaluate and stabilize Qi imbalances. We will conclude the evening by demonstrating the effectiveness of the new Qi bracelets.

Facilitators: Katie Brown and Jules Love, both Certified in Sooji Acutherapy & QiGong Energy Healing.

Hide and Seek of Shame

Shame is like the game of Hide and Seek. Remember how you picked that perfect hiding spot so that no one could find you? That is where you can find Shame. Shame is the feeling that you are not good enough, unacceptable or a failure. When consumed by shame, we are afraid someone may find the flawed person we believe we are. At first it may have felt good to know you were not exposed, because if someone knew the real you they may not like you. By keeping Shame hidden, your distortions about yourself may feel magnified. The fear of being found out (your beliefs about yourself) intensifies, and creates isolation from others and our authentic selves. Shame is an emotion we all experience, but we don't typically talk about it. Come learn more about shame, how it impacts us and how to let go of your tightly held beliefs that keeps you in fear of being discovered.
