Groups, Classes & Workshops

Practitioners at People House offer a wide variety of groups and classes. The descriptions provided below can help you decide which best fits your needs.

Why Groups, Classes & Workshops?

In the wired world of the twenty-first century the Internet allows us to connect with people and knowledge from around the globe. Digital encyclopedias, chat rooms, multimedia, even a virtual office at home, are all there at the click of a mouse. But is clicking really connecting? And what must "click" before we connect to ourselves?

At People House, our experience tells us that access to global information is no substitute for a deep connection to our own inner spirit. As human beings, that's really what we're looking for. Even in the most sophisticated lifestyles, the man or woman at peace is the one with self-knowledge.

In a group setting we find that we're not alone in our search. As we hear others tell their stories, we see how they deal with struggles not unlike our own. In telling our personal stories, we see the gift of our uniqueness reflected back to us in the loving faces of the group members. We feel compassion for others and for ourselves. We learn new behaviors and gain the courage to try them out in a supportive environment. We feel safe to shine a light on dark places in our life experiences. In the process, we connect to others and to ourselves.

The Brain Dominance Profile

You will create your own "dominance profile" and walk away with information about how you take in, assimilate and process sensory information, respond to and express new learning, and illuminate your behavior, especially in stressful circumstances. This class will be particularly useful to students, parents, teachers and couples, or anyone who feels they have ever had difficulty learning or "freeze up" under stress.

Relational Life Community Group

One of the things we believe in the Relational Life Institute, based on the work of Terry Real, is that our society and our pressures are not conducive to or supportive of our relationships. As a result, we attend a workshop and have great hopes of becoming different and using our new skills. However, what generally happens is we forget what we need to do to keep our 24/7 practice going and fall back into our default, old habits. This group is designed to explore and implement the effective tools found in Terry's groundbreaking books: The New Rules of Marriage, How Can I Get Through to You and I Don't Want to Talk About It. Whether you have asked for some kind of ongoing support to remind you of the skills or to have a place to ask questions; or, if you are not familiar with this model but are looking for a positive support for your couple, come and join us.

Enneagram Drop-In Class

The Enneagram is considered a Spiritual Psychology. The Enneagram is different than most personality typing systems in that it not only tells you about the pitfalls of your personality type, but it also gives you the tools necessary for moving beyond these pitfalls. In addition to talking about the psychological aspect of you, the Enneagram also provides the methods to move out of our personality beliefs and transform into the person you "truly" are - what is often called our essence. Studying the Enneagram allows you to catch yourself in "the act" of your personality pattern and begin to change your habitual routines. This is the pathway to transformation and well-being. As a drop-in class, you will be exposed to various elements of the Enneagram in each of the sessions. One session does not necessarily depend on the others. However, knowing your type would be helpful. Benefits Of Studying The Enneagram: · Acknowledges the diversity & uniqueness within each of us · Gives us tools to create change in ourselves · Encourages compassion for self and others · Creates new avenues for effective communication · Explains our differences; helps us understand ourselves & others · Restores hope & creates peace of mind and joy in our lives

Facilitator: Dee Marcotte MS, MA, LPC

Date/Time: Jan. 28, Feb. 11, Mar. 18, April 15 and May 13; Time: 6 - 8pm

Approach to Treatment with the Binge Eating / Obese Client

This seminar uses a combination of experiential exercises, lecture and small group work to teach the philosophy behind integrative approaches to binge eating disorder and compulsive overeating. This approach uses a five-step method that identifies points of resistance and core beliefs that stand in the way of recovery. Nutritional therapies, medication and other conventional therapies, alternative medicine and the use of dietary supplements will be discussed. This approach goes beyond dieting to identify and heal deeper causes of binge eating and weight gain and the beliefs that support them. The purpose of the seminar is to enable clinicians to work with their clients with binge eating to literally shift from the psychological mindset that supports their obesity to one that is in line with their conscious commitment to their health and well-being. The seminar offers proven strategies to enhance your understanding and ability to support the recovery and deeper healing of your clients with binge eating disorder. You will also have the opportunity to discuss difficult cases with Dr. Ross, who has been described as a pioneer in the use of integrative medicine for the treatment of eating disorders.

Shame Workshop

How has shame impacted your life and the way you feel about yourself? Although we don't often talk about shame, particularly our own shame, shame is an emotion we all experience. Shame is an emotion that we tend to evaluate ourselves. When we feel shame, we feel we are bad or flawed in some way. Our feelings of shame are internalized, hidden, and seem to grow in the dark. Shame is a way to disconnect from relationships and ourselves, not wanting other's to get too close to you, for fear they might see the real you. Defeating the hold of shame can be worked through constructively to move you to the authentic self you were created to be. Talking about shame reduces the effects and power that it has over us. For women, connection is about mutual support, acceptance and caring. Working through your shame requires you to talk about the ways you have experienced and felt shamed. But it doesn't end there. Healing comes from learning to feel compassion for yourself. Come learn more about shame, its impact, and healing.
