Groups, Classes & Workshops
Practitioners at People House offer a wide variety of groups and classes. The descriptions provided below can help you decide which best fits your needs.
Why Groups, Classes & Workshops?
In the wired world of the twenty-first century the Internet allows us to connect with people and knowledge from around the globe. Digital encyclopedias, chat rooms, multimedia, even a virtual office at home, are all there at the click of a mouse. But is clicking really connecting? And what must "click" before we connect to ourselves?
At People House, our experience tells us that access to global information is no substitute for a deep connection to our own inner spirit. As human beings, that's really what we're looking for. Even in the most sophisticated lifestyles, the man or woman at peace is the one with self-knowledge.
In a group setting we find that we're not alone in our search. As we hear others tell their stories, we see how they deal with struggles not unlike our own. In telling our personal stories, we see the gift of our uniqueness reflected back to us in the loving faces of the group members. We feel compassion for others and for ourselves. We learn new behaviors and gain the courage to try them out in a supportive environment. We feel safe to shine a light on dark places in our life experiences. In the process, we connect to others and to ourselves.
For more information contact the group leader or therapist of your choice directly or visit our informal Friday night drop-in group 7:30 pm-9pm where no ongoing commitment is necessary.

Because I Wouldn't, You Shouldn't
Resentment builds when you insist, demand, expect or require of others and/or yourself. Believing you are right and they are wrong or they are right and you are wrong creates serious misunderstandings. Knowing there is “one right way” excludes alternatives and causes conflict. Study the ways you set yourself up for frustration, anger, disappointment, and resentment by trying to change and/or control persons and situations. Learn to practice acceptance, allowance and tolerance. Explore how detachment and release create a newfound space for love and peace in your life.

Diagnosing, Treating and Referring for Substance Abuse Disorder
People who use drugs and alcohol are presenting themselves in outpatient therapy more frequently, but the person with problematic use does not always disclose this information, and if they do will minimize their use. Thus, it is crucial that the treating therapist have the skills to help diagnose a substance abuse condition through the use of comprehensive interviewing. Workshop focus will be first on acquiring a variety of ways to ask about a person’s use of drugs and alcohol in order to diagnose the condition, and second on the treatment of the person with a substance abuse disorder. The obstacles that make treating these conditions so challenging on an individual outpatient basis will be discussed. The last part will cover learning how to identify when a person needs a higher level of care and how to make a referral. This lecture will involve case examples, provide resources and place emphasis on discussion.
